The Southern Cross formation is among the best-known star pattern in the southern hemisphere and it is shaped as a cross, or as a kite. 

It is often confusing for the constellation of Crux as a whole, however, the Southern Cross is composed merely out of the 5 brightest stars in Crux - namely, Acrux, the brightest star in Crux.  Mimosa, the second Gacrux, Ginan, and Imai.  The Southern Cross has come to represent the land that lies below the equator.
